Dear St. Francis Parish, For five years (half of my ordained life) I have had the privilege and honor of serving here at St. Francis Parish. In those five years I came to experience the love and generosity of the many parishioners as they supported my ministry to the poor and homeless of Bakersfield. Working with Monsignor Craig and the staff of St. Francis has been nothing short of an awesome loving and learning experience. I am now beginning a new chapter in my ministerial journey serving God’s people as I transfer to St. Malachy Parish in Tehachapi. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers along with the many poor and homeless brothers and sisters I have been blessed to work with these last five years. May God continue His many blessing to you all. Deacon Richard Lambert

The Triduum
Wednesday, April 04, 2012
St Francis is very busy this time of year as we prepare for the Triduum. What’s that you ask… maybe it is a typo? The Triduum is the time of the Church year when we celebrate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This three-day celebration signals the end of Lent and begins with our Holy Thursday Mass and continues on Good Friday with the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion. At the end of this liturgy, we leave the church in silence, waiting to celebrate the glory of our Lord’s resurrection. Then, on Saturday at sun down, the Church re-gathers to celebrate the final, and most grand, moment of the Triduum: the Resurrection of our Lord. Join us this year during these three days when we join with Christ and journey with him toward the cross and rejoice in the glory of His resurrection.

A Lenten Journey

Sunday, April 01, 2012
In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI emphasized that it is part of the mission of the church to “contribute to improving the living conditions of people most affected by problems of poverty, malnutrition, especially among children, disease, and lack of health care and education services.” We see greater poverty around us everyday, as the economy serves fewer and fewer. We invite you to join us on a “Lenten Journey with the Homeless” and encourage you to keep a journal as you find light, life, openness, and a “lifting up” this Lenten season.

A Message from Bishop Armando X. Ochoa

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be "of, by, and for the people," has just dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people—the Catholic population—and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful. A New Year Prayer
Monday, January 02, 2012
Holy Father, God of our yesterdays, our today, and our tomorrows. We praise You for Your unequaled greatness. Thank You for the year behind us and for the year ahead. Help us in Your new year to fret less and laugh more. To teach our children to laugh by laughing with them. Knowing, when love came to the stable in Bethlehem, He came for us so that we could share love with others. Help us, Father, to hear Your sparrows in our backyards in the stories of our old folks, and in the fantasies of our children. Help us to stop and listen to Your love songs, so that we may know You better and better. We rejoice in the world You loved into being. Thank You for another new year and for new chances every day. We rejoice in Your name, Amen.

Hark the Herald, Angels Sing!!
Tuesday, December 20, 2011
Blog by Heidi Scott, Director of Music Ministry.
It seems rather annoying that the sounds of Christmas carols begin to surround us as early as October in shops and malls. Still, it would be difficult to think of a feast, holiday, or other occasion on which singing and music are so integral. The Gospel of Luke records the singing of the angels to proclaim the birth of Christ and the Lectionary Psalms for both Christmas Masses during the Night and during the Day both begin with this joyful imperative: “Sing to the Lord a new song” (Ps 96:1, 98:1). There’s little doubt that Christmas without singing is impoverished, even incomplete.
Like the characters in the Gospel stories, our assemblies bring a variety of experiences and backgrounds to the song of Christmas. Some are as simple and lowly as the shepherds, others as wise and adventurous as the Magi, still others as sorrowful as the victims of Herod’s brutal rage. The familiar carols, carefully chosen choral music, and still-new Mass parts will make their way onto the lips and into the ears of all of us who are experiencing joy, pain, success, loss, recovery, illness, intimacy, alienation, and a host of other human conditions.
With and within this assembly of blessed and broken women and men, we sing to a God who has fully embraced the lot of human beings by choosing to live among us. We sing for joy not because human suffering has been taken away but because God is one with us in our living and even in our dying. Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Let us remember that our Christmas season does not end on December 26th, but continues through Epiphany and kept in our hearts all through the year.

We Remember Our Loved Ones on All Souls Day
Thursday, November 03, 2011
We remember, we celebrate, we believe. Last night our Parish family came together to remember friends and family who have died in the years past. All Souls Day is celebrated at St. Francis by unfurling a scroll containing all the names of those whom we celebrated a funeral Mass for at our Parish. Monsignor Craig reminded us that it is not God's plan to take away a child from a loving parent or a family member from those who love them. But for whatever reason, God does come and welcome those whom we love into his arms at the moment of death. He added that grief and the absence of the person never gets easier, but as people of faith, we believe that in death, our life with our creator is complete. And so, we walk by faith and not by sight until that day when we will see our loved ones again in the eternal home God had prepared for us. So together, we pray, Lord let your mercy be on us as we place our trust in you.

Blessing of The Animals - The Feast of St. Francis
Sunday, October 02, 2011
"Let all things their Creator bless, And worship Him in humbleness, O praise Him! Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One!" - Francis of Assisi, circa 1225 A blessing of animals takes place at our Church ever year in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures. Dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses are led to our Church for a special ceremony in their honor. We believe every creature is important and a pet can be a true companion. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life and into the wonder of our relationship to our Creator.

2011 St. Francis Annual Fiesta on September 10th
Monday, September 12, 2011
Every September our parishioners have come to expect our annual Fiesta gathering. Despite the rain and thunder, our Fiesta this year was another huge success. We kicked off with Mass on the St. Francis School yard with Msgr. Craig who said the thunder sounded as if “God was clapping for us.” Almost immediately after Mass, a quick downpour of rain began that lasted only a few minutes and subsided so the festivities could continue! Our many Ministries were offering carnival style foods from hot dogs and hamburgers to chili boats, popcorn, and cake pops. We had a great turnout thanks to our active and alive parish community. Not even the weather could keep us from having a fun, faith filled evening with family and friends.
